The League In Focus: An Update After Week 13

It was a momentous week for the Northern in the Edinburgh Bowling Association Leagues as both of our gents teams took massive steps towards achieving their goals for the season with wins in the Warrison Derby against Goldenacre Bowling Club, while our ladies team signed off with a performance that shows they can keep progressing into next season

The Gents 1st XVI are really on fire at the moment and looking unstoppable as they claimed their third 9-0 victory in a row to leave them needing only another 3 points to guarantee promotion. There’s also the possibility of a title win as if they can better whatever result Summerside Bowling Club get next week by 2 points then that will be enough

It’s a far cry from mid-season when, lingering in mid-table and on a poor run of results, the team were left wondering if they had left it too late for a promotion push and tensions were high. But this just goes to show that if you stick in, and keep plugging away, then anything is possible. Keep sticking in lads, and get yourselves over that line!

The Gents 2nd XVI also picked up a win this week, although their 5-4 victory away from home, in combination with Slateford winning 9-0, means that they haven’t secured the title of their dreams just yet. But with only one game to go they do know that everything’s in their own hands and another 5-4 victory next week, when they play at home against London Road Foundry, would be enough to guarantee that title, with promotion already secured.

So here we are, just one week away from an evening in which both of our gents teams could be celebrating winning the league. What a time to be a Northern Member!

On Monday night, our ladies team played their final game of their very first season in the EBA leagues and they managed to pick up another 2 points in a 2-3 defeat to Colinton. The result means that they do finish the season in bottom place but it was always going to be tough to finish higher with a team of entirely new players, all in their first competitive season. They did manage to get some wins, and points, and even had a rink be just one match away from going to Ayr. Throughout they’ve shown consistent improvement and they’ve always been in high spirits as well. I’m already looking forward to next season to see how they keep that improvement going
