1st 16s Vs Tanfield @ Northern

We welcomed our near neighbours Tanfield to the Northern this evening with us in 5th place & Tanfield in 6th place 8.5 points behind us after 10 games, Big George Prentice was on R1 and got us off to a great start with a good win against a strong Tanfield rink, great 2 points.

On R3 was just returned from holiday Jamie Reid and they were up against it from the start, they were a good few shots down after about 7 ends, but a fantastic fight back got them back to peels with one to play , alas after a very tight last end  we lost this one  and it was 2 points each so far.

On R3 we had Young Gordon and his boys , after the first few ends we were  again a few shots down, at about end 11 we were 11-6 down and picked up 5 so peels at 11, we won the next couple of ends and were 15-11 up,at the 3rd last end we were lying 3 shots and the Tanfield skip drove at the head and got an unbelievable result removing our 3 bowls and leaving all their bowls for a 5 shot result, they won the last couple of ends to win 19-15,

Lastly up on R5 was Snoddy,John Young,Gogs Snr and James Barr and this rink is on fire at the moment winning this game  comfortably and helping immensely with the shots difference, great win lads, and a couple of fabulous take out shots from Big James helped with this win,

Excellent 5-4 home win lads and we keep our heads well above water and stretched our gap away from Tanfield by a massive Big 1 Point.

Queensberry away next week.

Top 10 Vs Ardmillan @ Northern

Hot Tuesday evening as we welcomed our opponents Ardmillan down to the Northern for this second round tie and this game was not to be taken lightly after our opponents had a great win last week against Hillside,

First up and on R1 with his Merry band of men was Big James with Gordon Snr, Larry VP Sorrel and Leading the way Snoddy, tight affair to start with but our boys pushed ahead and won this one getting us of to a good start,

Next up on R3 was the new pairing of Young Daz and Young Gaz :-), ha ha, got of to a good start going up 8 shots in the first 2 ends,Ardmillan did get back to peels at the third last end then a 2 followed for us and the loss of a 1 at the last end for a 1 shot win, 2 out of 2 so far,

The triple was on R4 ,and this was a real shocker, our 3 lead by the Mad Man,middle for diddle link man of Andy Travolta Reid and skipped by Ex Northern,Ex Ardmillan returned to Northern John Urqhahart, and he had a point to prove against his former team mates as this triple racked up the highest shots win ive ever seen in a competitive match winning 41-4,big well done lads,

Last up on R5 and who was actually 1st off was Young Gordon against a very formidable opponent ,the Ardmillan Champion on 7 occasions, Gogs got of to a good start going 4 up in the first couple of ends,Ardmillan came back into this game and it was tight during the middle part but Gordon pushed ahead to win this singles game to 13 to give us 4 wins out of 4′

Big well done to our Top 10 lads, and next up Carricknowe @ Carricknowe next Tuesday in the Quarter final of this event, come along and support our boys.

Darlington Crusade 2018

12 members met up for breakfast on Saturday morning before taking the train down to Darlington to play our friendly with the Hundens club. As with most trips there is always ‘the one’ and that was to be no different this time round either. ‘The one’ this was none other than Andy ‘its coming home three lions’ Reid who shimmied into the Booking Office in a top vaguely reminiscent of a France football top rather than the Clubs official attire. “My club tops are in the washing” was the feeble excuse.

On to the train for a largely uneventful trip down although Gary Largue did his best to match his shoes with his bowls by losing one of them! He was re-united with the footwear as we approached Darlington station. Sadly the errant bowl has never been recovered.Warmly welcomed by our hosts first up were 4 rinks of triples on a quick green bathed in glorious sunshine.  And here again Mr Reid was to be the ‘one’!!

Selected to play link in a triple he bullied Bob Lee’s love child, Graeme Prentice, into taking the skips position. “I am a Top 5 player don’t you know so I should skip” was rumoured to have been the call and Travolta then skipped the triple to a crushing defeat. The only one of the four to lose!  After the game Andy protested his innocence claiming that Graeme begged him to skip the team “You are a Top 6 player after all” supposedly being the call. Second half of the match was 3 rinks in which the NBC came out on top in 2. I can’t recall if Travolta was involved in the defeat but he probably was.

After an excellent meal we adjourned to the Rolling Mills club for a few rounds of hospitality and even though we are Scottish and our club sleeves are Sweden’s colours the members in the club were welcoming and generous. One England shirted gentleman even purchasing a bottle of Sambuca shots for us to enjoy!

Around 8 it was time to head to the station and that is where things got a little confused for this writer as we lost a few guys. Some of us on one train being hotly pursued up line by a second train carrying most of the rest EXCEPT for a single member (choo choo ) (Im not going on that train ) who did not get home until SUNDAY!! That is twice this member has visited Darlington and twice the gentleman has had very unfortunate difficulties with trains. Maybe best to go by coach next time!  All in all a very good day out rounded off with another couple of pints in our early morning starting point.

Our grateful thanks to our hosts and we can look forward to repeating the event next year.

1st 16s Vs Maitland away

Last Wednesday night saw us travel west to the Maitland and this shall be a short and not so sweet report, well done to our opponents who beat us on all rinks and a resounding 9-0 defeat the first of those for a long time, but lets shake it of and get back to normal business next week with a home tie against our nearest rivals Tanfield and we need a good result to keep them at bay.

Top ten win against Seafield

A good home win on Tuesday night at the Northern against a tough Seafield team, and we were missing Ian Miller and Jamie Reid, Young Gogs playing the singles on R1, this was a cracker with great bowls being played over the whole match on a very fast Northern surface, Seafield came out tops on this tight affair winning 21-19,

On R3 a new pairing of Garry Harrison and Darren Prentice tried their luck, and this match was peels at 10 after 16 ends, after building the head we were lying one shot right on top of the Jack with Seafield lying a shot either side but crucially they had 4 bowls behind the head , skips second bowl sprung the white right in the middle of this bunch and the skip drew 2 more, so a loss of 6 at the second last and it was game over in the pairs,

so two losses and we needed the triple and rink to win both handsomely to take us through and fortunately both came up with the goods, so the triple of Mad Mitch, Andy Travolta and John Urquhart won by a few, and our Rink of Snoddy, Walter, Quiet and Retiring Gordon Wilson and even more quiet and retiring, no I really mean it James Barr who won by a good few shots, big well done lads,

and its Ardmillan next at the Northern
