1st 16s Vs Maitland away

Slow start to the season so far & another difficult game , this time against Maitland BC who have been very consistent in recent years, On R6 1 was Gordon Wilson Snr & a welcome return of Mike Burns skipped by James Barr, the 4th member of this rink never turned up so they were always going to struggle losing a quarter of their score & they never quite got going but not for the lack of effort of these three bowlers, R5 saw Graeme Prentice,Walter Murray,Andy Reid and Ian Miller have a good game against a decent Maitland rink whose Skip it seemed could do no wrong on the night, R4 saw Skip young Gogs lead his troops , Ewan , Grant & Gaz H in a yo yo game, unfortunately losing a 4 and a 5 in the middle of this game was enough to make the difference and eventually after a hard fought last end which could easily have went either way the opposition were happy to lose a one at this end but win the game by a shot, the Northern stars on this disappointing night were on R3 lead by Daz P, another welcome returnee John Young , 3rd Davy Scott & valliantly Skipped by Jamie Reid, pretty tight game all the way here, at the last end Maitland had the advantage with a 2 shot lead but after a brilliant last end from all our lads we won the end with a terrific 3 and a very welcome 2 points, great effort all the Northern lads, Big game next week against our fellow strugglers Brunstane at the Northern.

2018 Northern Triples Final

On a sunny windy bright autumnal Sunday afternoon we finally got around to playing the last Scottish final of the year between the Holders Garry Harrison, Gordon Wilson jnr and Jamie Reid against the challengers John Newall , Craig Snodgrass and John Urquhart,

Eagerley supported by the legend that is Kenny Dixon,Dave Smith,Kenny Lawrence and here to support his brother former Northern Champ Bo Urquhart.

the holders got off to a great start with a 4 at the first, they were also lying well at the second with at least another 4 when J.Urquhart played a brilliant saving draw to get them off the mark ( 4-1 )

the next few ends were played out and the score got to about 7-3 and the tables were turned the challengers were lying at least 6 shots and Jamie drew in with his last bowl to take a 1, there was a lot of great bowls being played by all players and the shot bowl was changing hands several times throughout the course of each end, after a few more ends of one’s and two’s being scored the score levelled out at 10 -7 to the holders, there then followed a three and a one to make the score 14-7 after  the challengers had a couple of chances the next two ends and had a chance at a take out to maybe get a 5 but a narrow miss and this got them only two singles  making the score now 14-9 with ends running out, at end 13 the holders picked up a 1 so with 2 to go they had stretched their lead to 6, at the second last end John Urquhart, and squad had to look to get  big score but Jamie’s team were playing neat bowls and just covering any big score losses and just mixing and matching the bowls, J. Urquhart wins the fourteenth end with just a 1 so Jamie and crew 5 up at the last and some great bowls here by both leads which was reiterated by the seconds , so with J. Urquhart lying 2 it wasn’t going to be enough he attempted the burn with his 1st which didn’t miss by much, the 2nd though was spot on and the end was to be replayed, good standard of bowls once again played by all players and it was the challengers who had to force things with Garry ,Gogs and Jamie just covering any big scores mixing and matching but for John Newall ,Craig and John Urquhart it didn’t come of this time and the winners for the second year running Garry Harrison,Gordon Wilson jnr and Jamie Reid a big well done and Congratulations. To the runners up John Newall, Craig Snodgrass and John Urquhart. well done for a great final played in the right spirit and enjoyed a few drinks in the clubhouse after.

1st 16s Vs Craiggy @ Northern

Last game of the season against the new Division 1 Champions, and they turned up for this last game with an unrecognizable 1st 16 team with several players away on holiday and nothing at stake, John Urquahart and James Barr were the only ones to come out of this one with pass marks for the Northern,Ian Miller had a reasonably close game and Young Gogs and Co were turned over big style,so we finish the season with a 5-4 defeat, not the worst season ever though as we have ended up in 5th place with Brunstane just below us and Tanfield and Summerside falling through the trap door into Div 2,

Congratulations to Div 1 winners Craigentinny,

and next year we welcome Carricknowe into Div 1 for the 1st time and also Postal,

Well done to the Northern lads, and well done to the seconds who were runners up in Div 1.

1st 16s Vs Summerside Away

Penultimate game of the season  and probably the least said about this one the better,a lot of call offs for this game and varying excuses as to why we struggled to put out a 1st and 2nd 16 this week, understandable that the 1st 16s were safe but the seconds are right in the mix for winning the 1st Division, well done to the selectors for begging stealing and borrowing and after being on the phone most of the day thanks also to the guys who maybe haven’t been playing in the teams recently but turned out to help us fulfill both of these games, only thing to be said about the 1st 16s, this game did have a lack luster feel to it  and possibly Summerside were more up for it than us at the business end where it counted, and they did need the points I think 3 of these games were tight right up to the last end  but they had a great home win 9-0 and we left with nothing, well done Summerside,

Last game next week at home against this years Division 1 winners Craiggy.

1st 16s Vs Queensberry @ the Berry

This is the 3rd last game of the season and the last game before a one week break for the Scottish Championships through at Ayr next week,
On R1 saw Larry VP Sorrell newly promoted to skip after a few good performances,Graham Prentice was leading this rink and the bowls that I saw him playing he was back to his best, on fire, and not far off this standard was reliable Walter Murray never far away, this rink was thirded by Super Andy Travolta ( shake it baby, lets hope the hips are shaking next week at Ayr )Great performance here against a very strong Queensberry rink winning by a substancial margin, 2 points Northern,
R2 was Garry H, El Presidente,Young Daz and Gogs Jnr, this was a good all round performance from the lads and Daz gets the man of the match accolade in this game for a great performance, and another fine win and 2 points to the Northern against Frank O’Reilly on home soil , no easy feat,
Big James barr was on R3 , thirded by Gogs of the Senior variety, seconded by John Young and Lead was Snoddy, this rink has been playing very well recently and kept up thier good form tonight with another resounding victory, and another great 2 points in the bag here for our lads,
The only blot on the copy book came on R4 which was lead by gaRy ( 1 R ) Largue,John Newall was second, the Mad one was 3rd and John Urquahart was skip, these lads were a few shots down early doors but did make a bit of a ressurgence but alas not enough, and tonight we leave the Berry with 7 points tucked away, which is very gratefully received ,thankyou,
A weeks break now for the Nationals at Ayr and lets just wish our rink all the Very Best of Luck

Andy Reid, Gordon Wilson Snr, Jamie Reid, Gordon Wilson Jnr,

Summerside away on the 1st of August for our penultimate league match.

1st 16s Vs Tanfield @ Northern

We welcomed our near neighbours Tanfield to the Northern this evening with us in 5th place & Tanfield in 6th place 8.5 points behind us after 10 games, Big George Prentice was on R1 and got us off to a great start with a good win against a strong Tanfield rink, great 2 points.

On R3 was just returned from holiday Jamie Reid and they were up against it from the start, they were a good few shots down after about 7 ends, but a fantastic fight back got them back to peels with one to play , alas after a very tight last end  we lost this one  and it was 2 points each so far.

On R3 we had Young Gordon and his boys , after the first few ends we were  again a few shots down, at about end 11 we were 11-6 down and picked up 5 so peels at 11, we won the next couple of ends and were 15-11 up,at the 3rd last end we were lying 3 shots and the Tanfield skip drove at the head and got an unbelievable result removing our 3 bowls and leaving all their bowls for a 5 shot result, they won the last couple of ends to win 19-15,

Lastly up on R5 was Snoddy,John Young,Gogs Snr and James Barr and this rink is on fire at the moment winning this game  comfortably and helping immensely with the shots difference, great win lads, and a couple of fabulous take out shots from Big James helped with this win,

Excellent 5-4 home win lads and we keep our heads well above water and stretched our gap away from Tanfield by a massive Big 1 Point.

Queensberry away next week.

Top 10 Vs Ardmillan @ Northern

Hot Tuesday evening as we welcomed our opponents Ardmillan down to the Northern for this second round tie and this game was not to be taken lightly after our opponents had a great win last week against Hillside,

First up and on R1 with his Merry band of men was Big James with Gordon Snr, Larry VP Sorrel and Leading the way Snoddy, tight affair to start with but our boys pushed ahead and won this one getting us of to a good start,

Next up on R3 was the new pairing of Young Daz and Young Gaz :-), ha ha, got of to a good start going up 8 shots in the first 2 ends,Ardmillan did get back to peels at the third last end then a 2 followed for us and the loss of a 1 at the last end for a 1 shot win, 2 out of 2 so far,

The triple was on R4 ,and this was a real shocker, our 3 lead by the Mad Man,middle for diddle link man of Andy Travolta Reid and skipped by Ex Northern,Ex Ardmillan returned to Northern John Urqhahart, and he had a point to prove against his former team mates as this triple racked up the highest shots win ive ever seen in a competitive match winning 41-4,big well done lads,

Last up on R5 and who was actually 1st off was Young Gordon against a very formidable opponent ,the Ardmillan Champion on 7 occasions, Gogs got of to a good start going 4 up in the first couple of ends,Ardmillan came back into this game and it was tight during the middle part but Gordon pushed ahead to win this singles game to 13 to give us 4 wins out of 4′

Big well done to our Top 10 lads, and next up Carricknowe @ Carricknowe next Tuesday in the Quarter final of this event, come along and support our boys.

1st 16s Vs Maitland away

Last Wednesday night saw us travel west to the Maitland and this shall be a short and not so sweet report, well done to our opponents who beat us on all rinks and a resounding 9-0 defeat the first of those for a long time, but lets shake it of and get back to normal business next week with a home tie against our nearest rivals Tanfield and we need a good result to keep them at bay.
