On a glorious Wednesday night in front of a crowd of their peers, a hotly anticipated Triples final took place between skips Gordon Wilson Jr and Roy Campbell.
Roy Campbells team, featuring Jimmy Martin at lead and Jim Prentice in the middle, rose to a 6-0 lead in the first three ends only for an incredible final bowl of the 4th end from Gogs Jr that brought the white into the ditch to earn a wonderful 5 shots for his team, featuring Allan Mitchell at lead with Garry Harrison in the middle, to bring it to 6-5 with a move that shows just how quickly bowls score lines can turn.
They kept up that form to win a 2 in the following end for a lead of 7-6 going into the 6th where they went on to win another 2 to go 9-6 ahead
Roy “The ROC” and Co bounced back to win a 2 in the 7th and then Jim Prentice took the white into to the ditch in the 8th to tie the score at 9-9. They won the following end again to take a 1 shot lead into the 10th with Jimmy Martins long jacks causing problems for the tournament favourites.
The match stayed tight though as Wilson Jr’s team took a 2 to make it 11-10 followed by a 3 to give them a lead of 4 going into the 12th end.
They extended this further by winning a 1 and things started to really look grim for the Roy Campbell led team when two cracking bowls from Gordon Wilson Jr’s lead Allan Mitchell ramped up the pressure on their opposition and they did go on to win that end with the two shots from their lead to make it 16-10 going into a potential penultimate end
Wilson’s team ended up winning that by a shot but their opponents aren’t ones to give up when a win or peels is still mathematically possible. However, it wasn’t to be for them and Gogs’ team kept up their form to take 2 shots in the final end for a 19-10 victory overall
It was mainly a game of long jacks and I’m also told the green was heavier than for yesterdays Seniors final but some wonderful bowls were played and both teams put on a great show. The match was also played in great spirits with smiles on all faces despite the result. Northern spirit is the real winner here
Roy Campbell will be hoping for better luck in his Friday night singles Championship Final match with Andy Reid and I hope to see you all down at the club for that showpiece event. Let’s cheer on both players and make it a night to remember.
