Northern 2 Bowls Singles And Pairs 2024

It was a great day out on Saturday as the first Northern silverware of the season was fought for and congratulations to Garry Harrison who won the singles event, and to Gary Largue and Mike Morrison who won the pairs.

The weather may have been overcast, leading to a lower turnout than expected if the sun had been blazing, as the forecast initially said, but those who turned up were in good spirits throughout as the two competitions got into full swing.

With matches played over 7 ends anything could happen and so it did with some upsets in the early rounds of the singles after Michele Price first defeated veteran Mike Morrison and then came within a inch of defeating eventual finalist Gary Largue. In the second round there was also a battle of the brothers as Davey Reid came out on top against singles Club Champion Andy Reid.

The competition ended with what shall surely be known as “The Garries Final” as Garry Harrison defeated Gary Largue to lift the trophy for a 4th time and to assert authority as the clubs top lead.

The pairs competition, as always, was very evenly contested across the board due to the pairs being picked at random on the day with a seeding system, putting more experienced and newer players, who might not normally meet, together with eachother.

Defeated singles finalist Gary Largue did end the day with a trophy though as he and partner Mike Morrison defeated Davey Reid and Ally Mitchell in the final.

Everything was always fair and competitive while also being friendly throughout the day and while those who maybe only got a couple games may have wished to do better or to play more, maybe next year with nicer weather and a bigger turnout there could be an earlier start with a round-robin, guaranteeing more time on the green for each individual. Let’s all keep doing our bit to try and help the club grow!

With the prizes dished out, and everyone’s throats delightfully lubricated, it came to a quiet end as people left satisfied with their day out and let’s hope to see more like it through the year!

Here’s a reminder that our ladies team play their first league game of the season at home tomorrow night, Monday 6th May, 630pm start. Let’s get as many people as we can to come on down and cheer them on.

We also have an open mixed pairs competition coming up on 18th May and if you have friends at other clubs then do feel free to spread the word and get them involved. It should be another great day out! Also, if you’re a male at the Northern who hasn’t got a female partner for it yet then don’t be scared to put your name down on the noticeboard as someone who’s looking for one!

You should find a full schedule of upcoming events below

Good luck to both our Mens and Womens teams for their league fixtures this week!
