It was a grey and wet night on Wednesday as we found out who the new Porterfield trophy champion is after David Smith defeated Grant Young in a back-and-forth 21-16 victory
This match, the first official one to be played on the newly formed rink 3 after the green was switched to play the other way, started evenly with the players trading a shot each in the first two ends but it’s Grant who then stepped forward to claim a magical 4 in the third and our resident Hearts aficionado kept that general form going to be 7-4 up after six ends and at that time it probably seemed like seventh heaven to be there.
But that feeling of paradise no doubt soon turned to a sense of being stuck in limbo as he ended up staying on 7 shots all the way up to the twelfth end as David clawed back and then went ahead. Grant did eventually take a 1 to escape that limbo-like space, and he then followed it up with a 3 to make the score 12-11 in David’s favour, making sure that it stayed tight. But the time spent in that limbo was to prove costly.
Davey won a 1 in the fourteenth following a tight measure performed by marker Walter Murray, and he then took a 2 in the fifteenth to stretch his lead further but that was followed up by Grant taking a 2 of his own. However, that 2 brought Grant’s score to 13 it definitely seemed to be an unlucky number for him tonight as he found himself trapped in another limbo of sorts and unable to win any shots for another three ends by which point the score was 20-13 to P.C Smith (that P.C stands for Perfect Chapper btw 😂)
Grant did escape from his second limbo of the match in style with an wonderful drive using his last bowl in the twentieth end to turn things around from David lying 1 to Grant lying 3 but it wasn’t to be enough as David landed his final 1 shot blow in the 21st end to win 21-16.

Having defeated Kenny Lawrence and Walter Murray after a bye from Allan Mitchell on their way to the final the victory was certainly hard fought against an opponent who’d beaten Gregor Swinton, Ben Vernon and Aron Thirkill on their road to the big occasion
I gather this is Davey’s first singles competition win and it’s a prestigious one as well as so many top names were involved in the draw. It’s great to see a new name on the trophy and it’s well deserved for a popular member of the club. Raise a glass for them wherever you are!
Presentation night’s happening in November and I’ll be sure to try and snap some photos of the winners with their prizes when it happens but I really hope to see you all there too!
