Bobby Loch Three Bowls Singles 2023

Well done to Gordon Wilson Snr who managed to fend off 23 rivals to win the coveted Bobby Loch trophy after a busy day of bowls

This was a long anticipated event as the tournament never happened in 2022 and the ladies section, with the aid of super chef for the day Scott, organized a BBQ to make it extra special and to keep everyones energy levels high while also participating themselves in this mixed singles event.

As the sun shone down, creating perfect conditions, the 24 registered players were split up into groups of 6, guaranteeing that everyone was able to play 5 matches in the Round-Robin phase which was a great chance to earn some experience in cut-throat games of 5 ends against people who you might not normally get to play. It also gave a good competitive practice opportunity to some of our newer players as well.

As you can imagine, with so many people all needing to play 25 ends split over 5 matches it was non-stop stuff from
1-7pm as one batch of players leaving the green signalled the turn of the next to make their mark. It was a real test of stamina and concentration due to the stop-start nature, especially with a lot of players also acting as markers and not really getting any breaks between their activities but everyone took their turn and spirits were high.

Some upsets even occurred within the group stages as newcomers either beat or ran some veterans close and there were some top names who missed out on qualifying for the quarter finals as a result

But after some tense last 8 and semi finals action the main event ended up being between Grant Young and Gordon Wilson Snr as ultimately they both played the best bowls on the day.

It was the eventual winner Gordon who took an early initiative in the final and he managed to hold on to that throughout to end up victorious after a last-ditch drive from Grant to try and burn the final end just felt short

Well done everyone for participating in making the event such a successful day, it was great to see so many getting involved and I’m looking forward to next year. Hopefully we pick another sunny day!
