It was a glorious time at the Northern yesterday, as members and friends gathered in the sun for our 2024 opening day
Greeted by new President Robbie Paterson, around 50 people turned up for a historic afternoon of bowls, chats, dances and to put our new bar through its paces as our newly formed ladies section took to the green for the first time ever on an opening day
The clubhouse was in great shape, thanks to the volunteers who’ve worked on it through the winter months, and while an opening day green is never going to be the best to play on, it was noted by many that it was playing better than on previous opening days, and that it’s really in great shape. Things are looking good for the year ahead and it should be the start of an upward curve for us!
Newly appointed First Lady Denise Paterson rolled the first jack of the day, as is tradition, and she put it to a length of 27.45 metres, much to the luck of former EBA and Northern President Garry Harrison who had the closest prediction
There was also a fun Spider event which you can see a video of above, in which new Vice President Walter Murray was victorious to claim the liquid prize, which he then very kindly donated back to the club for future events
There was also a raffle drawn by the President’s grandsons Rory and Leo, which raised £145 for Maggies 🙌🙏
When it comes down to the actual bowls, the President’s team won 87-79 in order to achieve the bragging rights, but of course the matches were played in a very friendly manner as everyone was just thrilled to be back out there on the green and back in amongst their community
Thank you to everyone who not only turned up and contributed to a wonderful day out yesterday, but also to everyone who helped to keep the club going through the winter months by helping with our drainage issues, new bar installation and the social events!
Don’t forget that this Wednesday, 24th April, we’re asking those men who wish to play in League matches to come down and have a practice game amongst ourselves with a 6.30 start time
The men’s first league fixture is Wednesday, May 1st, with the first XVI at home to Maitland and the 2nd XVI away to Slateford
On Saturday May 4th we are having a one-day 2 bowls singles and pairs tournament, with a round robin and a whole day of bowls action. Clear your diaries! But also there’s more information about this to come in future posts
On Monday May 6th our ladies start their league campaign at home to Dean. Come on down and cheer them on!
Our latest quiz night will also be happening on Friday, May 24th so get yourselves a team, start revising, and make sure to get along!
