It was a glorious day at Willowbrae for the annual Edinburgh Bowling Associations Charity Triples match in aid of St Columba’s Hospice & the Northern had plenty of members in action
Representing the club was an official team of Mike Morrison & Roy Campbell with Jim Prentice at skip & they made a solid start with a 3-3 draw in the sunshine against the host club
Modern bowls sometimes does require a bit of team tinkering though & so for their second match they switched it up to put Roy at lead followed by Jim with Mike skipping the squad to a wonderful 5-2 victory over their competitors from Corstorphine
So it was all to play for heading into the final round of the group stage & showing their versatility they decided to change the formation again with Jim at lead, Mike in the middle & Roy at skip. Unfortunately, they lost a 4 in the first end but despite that, they managed to claw back to set up a nailbiting finale in which they were holding shots but a wonderful drive followed by a draw in successive ends from the Colinton skip saw them end up losing 6-4 to put an early end to their day
But there were some respectable results & phases of play & the lads can be proud of putting on a good show for such a good cause & event.
However, they weren’t our only representatives on the day as former Northern Club Champion & current EBA president Garry Harrison was playing in an EBA select team featuring Tanfields Robert White alongside their club mate Carol Munro, the first lady member of the EBA, in a wonderful show of solidarity & forward thinking from a modern & progressive organization.
In their successful group stage campaign, they were up against Queensberry, Mayfield, & Postal before playing Postal again in the quarter-final. They were victorious in that rematch while also going on to beat Parkside in the semi to set up a tense final with the highly rated Currie. But there was no stopping them in their pursuit for glory & it’s a delight to be able to write that the Northern did have a player in the top team of the day. Well done Garry!
Overall it seems like a marvellous day was had by everyone & there was a good turnout of spectators as well which hopefully all leads to lots of funds raised for St Columba’s Hospice & maybe even some new fans of the sport. Congratulations to everyone involved in the event at all levels, from organizers to players for putting on such a great day out for such a great cause
It’s not even the end of the fundraising as throughout the year EBA President Garry will be visiting all 43 county clubs, rolling 1 jack, delivering 1 bowl, & the distance will be measured. The total over those 43 clubs will be accumulated & counted & people have an opportunity to guess what that number will be for just £1. The closest guess wins & the winner will get £100 with all the rest of the pot going to St Columba’s Hospice. There’s also a fundraising evening due to be happening at the Northern with a disco, raffle & auction to raise as much funds as possible & I’m sure we’ll all look forward to the date of that being announced! Who’s the club king of the dancefloor & might they be dethroned? Answers on a postcard, please!
